Custom Remote Control Manufacturer Protecting Client Designs

Why We Turned Down a Custom Remote Order to Protect Our Client

In the custom manufacturing business, it’s not every day that you turn down an order. But sometimes, the right decision isn’t the most profitable one — it’s the one that protects your clients and your reputation.

Here’s a story about two companies, one design, and a decision we’re proud of.

The Situation: Two Clients, One Design

We work with a factory partner that produces custom remote controls for a long-term client — let’s call them Client A. Over the years, we’ve developed a specific remote design for Client A, and it has become a key part of their product line.

Recently, a representative from another company — let’s call them Client B — reached out to us. Client B is in the same industry as Client A, and they wanted a remote control with the same appearance and mold as Client A’s design.

Client B was flexible: they offered to change the color, the button icons, and even the silk-screen printing. They just wanted the same shell and overall look.

Why We Didn’t Say Yes Immediately

On the surface, it seemed like a straightforward request. We have the mold, we could produce it, and Client B was willing to customize the details. But we knew something important: Client A and Client B were both competitors and partners in some areas of their business.

We reached out to Client A to discuss the situation. They told us they were not comfortable with us producing that specific design for Client B — even with different colors and icons. From their perspective, the shell and overall appearance were part of their brand identity.

Our Decision: No to the Same Design, Yes to a Better Alternative

We went back to Client B and explained that we couldn’t produce the same design for them. It wasn’t about capability — it was about respecting our existing client’s rights and our commitment to protecting their interests.

But we didn’t just say “no.” We offered an alternative: we could produce a different remote model from our existing mold library, or work with them on a completely new design that would be uniquely theirs.

Client B appreciated the honesty and the alternative. We’re now exploring a new project together — one that doesn’t compromise anyone’s interests.

Why We Believe in Win-Win, Not Win-at-All-Costs

In manufacturing, it’s easy to chase every order. But we believe that long-term relationships are built on trust, not on short-term gains.

If we had accepted Client B’s request, we might have made a quick sale. But we would have damaged our relationship with Client A — a client who has trusted us for years. And we would have set a precedent that we don’t protect our clients’ designs.

We want every client to know: when you work with us, your designs, your molds, and your brand identity are safe. We won’t use them to help your competitors, even if it costs us an order.
